Yeliz Yilmaz has been announced as the first recipient of an EACR-Molecular Oncology Editorial Fellowship, funding that is awarded to enable a talented cancer researcher to gain knowledge and experience of scientific publishing through a 3-month placement with our affiliated journal Molecular Oncology.
Jane Smith, Chief Executive Officer of the EACR, congratulated Yeliz on her achievement, stating, “We are thrilled to have Yeliz as the first recipient of an EACR-Molecular Oncology Editorial Fellowship. This is a great opportunity for an EACR member to find out about the world of scientific publishing and the editorial process, and to develop their skills in scientific writing. We are grateful to the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) for facilitating the Fellowship with its journal. We look forward to further collaborations with FEBS and Molecular Oncology, including a second Editorial Fellowship to be offered later this year.”
Yeliz recently caught up with us to let us know how she feels about receiving this Fellowship. “Throughout our education, we are well trained about how to successfully design and perform an experiment, how to analyse the data and how to write a manuscript,” she says, “However, how to fluently tell a story with the data and how to better communicate and connect with the readers, including the editors and the reviewers, are learned through long time experience. Therefore, this opportunity will tremendously help me in gaining perspective about the aspects of publishing in an early phase of my career and improve my scientific editing and writing skills. I am looking forward to the chance of joining the publishing kitchen and experience the other side of the scientific world!”
About the Recipient
Yeliz Yilmaz is currently working as a postdoc at Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center in Turkey. After receiving Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics in Boğaziçi University, she moved to Dokuz Eylul University and started her PhD in the field of cancer biology.
Under the supervision of Professor Nese Atabey, she could combine her long-time passion, metabolism, with cancer. She was eager to investigate the mechanisms behind obesity-related hyperinsulinemia in the promotion of tumour progression and aggression. During her PhD, she had the chance to visit and benefit from the scientific environments of Eggeling Lab (Oxford University, UK) and Estall Lab (IRCM, Canada).
After completing her doctoral studies, she started working as a postdoc in a joint collaborative project of Atabey Lab and Desbois-Mouthon Lab (INSERM-Paris, France). She continued to study the role of insulin receptor isoforms in receptor crosstalk and the perturbated signalling in cancer. Moreover, she was enthusiastic about suggesting a mechanistic perspective of the post-translational modification, neddylation, in the development and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma. Like many researchers, her long-time ambition is to see her studies to be translated to cancer therapy as a part of personalised treatment alternatives.

The aim of this funding is to provide an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience of scientific publishing through a short-term fellowship with the FEBS journal Molecular Oncology.
