October 16, 2025

At the Early Career Researchers’ Conference 2025, we enjoyed a brilliant programme of diverse sessions from a range of experts, including Joan Chang from the University of Manchester, UK, who delivered a thought-provoking talk titled ‘The one constant in research – “failure” and how to support people (and yourself) through them’.

Joan describes her journey as one filled with perceived failures, including unsuccessful grant applications and publication challenges, despite significant achievements. She emphasises the importance of passion for science and the desire to mentor future generations despite the pressures and failures encountered in academia.
