“Stimulating and inspiring”: Feedback from the 2025 EACR-funded EMBO workshops

“One of the best professional experiences of my life”: feedback from EACR-funded EMBO workshops

In September 2025, we funded 32 places for EACR members at two EACR-funded online training workshops on the topics of ‘Scientific Integrity’ and ‘Laboratory Leadership’.

The workshops were facilitated by EMBO, a trusted leader in scientific publishing, communication and leadership training, and we were delighted to recently receive such positive feedback from the researchers who were selected to attend.

Scientific Integrity, 10 September 2025

This practical, interactive workshop was designed for early-career researchers who wanted to understand how to design, conduct, and publish research that stands up to scrutiny and makes a lasting impact. It tackled real-world challenges in reproducibility, from experimental design to data sharing and authorship.

What did the attendees have to say?

“One of the most impactful takeaways from the workshop was realising that research integrity is not always black and white, but requires continuous awareness and responsibility. I learned how important it is to clearly define methods, including handling outliers, and to approach experiments with a strong hypothesis-driven mindset.”

“It gave me a deeper understanding of the subtle, yet significant, nuances of image acquisition and integrity. Dr. Teale’s practical group activity on identifying and correcting image aberrations was particularly eye-opening. It taught me that maintaining a high level of research integrity isn’t just about avoiding major misconduct; it’s also about a meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of data presentation. This insight is something I’ll carry with me in all future research, ensuring my work is not only scientifically sound but also ethically unimpeachable.”

“The workshop on scientific integrity was extremely valuable, providing a comprehensive review of key principles and best practices in responsible research. It reinforced the importance of collaboration ethics and critical self-reflection, helping me consistently evaluate my own methods and results. As a young researcher and beginner journal reviewer, it particularly sharpened my attention to detail, especially in evaluating figures and data presentation. Overall, the experience strengthened my commitment to fostering trust, rigor, and credibility in research, and I approach team projects with positivity, transparency, and careful selectivity, engaging in collaborations that uphold high scientific and ethical standards.”

“The paramount takeaway was: never compromise your integrity because once it is broken it will never get back again no matter how hard we try.”

Laboratory Leadership, 30 September – 02 October 2025

This intensive workshop, aiming to nurture the next generation of laboratory leaders in cancer research, was designed for junior Principal Investigators with up to 5 years’ experience or Postdoctoral Researchers on the path to leading their own research groups. Throughout the workshop, we explored crucial aspects of effective leadership, from understanding the roles and dynamics within their teams to honing communication and conflict resolution skills.

What did the attendees have to say?

“This course is essential for providing a new perspective on team leadership, featuring valuable content, engaging discussions, and personal reflections.”

“What I found most valuable about the workshop was the opportunity to step back from the day-to-day research challenges and reflect on my role as a leader. The combination of structured tools, open discussions, and practical exercises helped me to clarify my own values, better understand team dynamics, and translate these insights into concrete steps for my group. I especially enjoyed the exchange with peers, realising that many of our challenges are shared, and learning from different perspectives.”

“I think it was a great opportunity for me to participate in this course. I have benefited a lot and feel really motivated to start using many of the tips that I learnt to improve my leadership skills. I made lots of notes and am trying to incorporate the new ideas in my everyday work schedule.”

Look out for further EACR-funded workshops
