EACR 2023 Annual Congress in review: “world-class speakers discussing the most innovative current research topics”

August 15, 2025
‘Science in Motion: Navigating Transitions’: EACR Science Communication Prize 2023

We were delighted to welcome the cancer research community to Torino, Italy for the EACR Annual Congress 2023: Innovative Cancer Science between 12 – 15 June 2023.

We enjoyed a jam-packed programme of fascinating science with a range of Plenary sessions, Symposia, Meet the Expert panels and Educational Sessions. We saw 2,100+ participants from 65 countries come through the Lingotto Fiere venue doors, of whom 98% told us in our feedback survey that they would recommend the Congress. Thank you so much to everyone who joined us!

This year’s programme included six keynote lectures, including a talks from EMBO Member and President-Elect Yardena Samuels. There were 37 Proffered Paper presentations throughout the week on a range of topics.

A record number of 1,152 posters were presented

Award Lectures

The first day saw the presentation of three prestigious awards: the EACR-Mark Foundation-Pezcoller Foundation Rising Star Award, the Pezcoller Foundation-EACR Translational Cancer Researcher Award, and the Pezcoller-Marina Larcher Fogazzaro-EACR Women in Cancer Research Award.

Isidro Cortes-Ciriano, a Research Group Leader at EMBL-EBI, received the Rising Star Award which recognises an exceptional researcher in the field of cancer research. The Translational Cancer Researcher Award was presented to Nicola Aceto of ETH Zurich, followed by the presentation of the Women in Cancer Research Award to Johanna Joyce of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research.

Each recipient then delivered an Award Lecture as part of the main Congress programme.

Career Discovery Sessions

On Tuesday and Wednesday we hosted Career Discovery Sessions dedicated to young researchers who were looking to boost their career by learning tips and tricks on different professional pathways. Participants could join various ’round tables’, each focused on a given topic and expertise.

Topics included pursuing a career in publishing, determining the best match between a PI and an institute, and designing a translational research project, amongst others.

The Sessions proved to be hugely popular and well received by those who pre-registered to attend. They were praised multiple times in our participant feedback survey as a key highlight of the Congress programme, described as “a great opportunity for young investigators“.

Each ’round table’ featured a different expert

Exhibition Passport Competition

The Exhibition Passport Competition winner won a brand new iPad!

We are very grateful for the support of the 90 companies and associations who joined our exhibition in Torino. With a huge, and possibly daunting, exhibition hall ahead of you and plenty of company reps excited to network, it can be overwhelming.

This year we introduced a new passport competition to break the ice and encourage participants to explore. Each stand hosted a unique QR code and the more companies you visited and scanned, the more entries you got into the draw to win a 10th Gen Apple iPad and free registrations to next year’s Congress.

After more than 5000 entries, we were delighted to draw the winners on the last evening. We hope everyone enjoyed the friendly competition and touring the exhibition. We hope you’ll take part again next year at Rotterdam!

New EACR Badges

The Congress was a great opportunity for us to showcase our lovely new pin badges, which are always incredibly popular with EACR members! Participants had the choice of 10 different designs, each describing what we at the EACR believe ‘research is’:

Pioneering, Limitless, Creativity, Tireless, Collaboration, The Future of Medicine, Curiosity, Unpredictable, Fun-damental, Life-saving

Decisions, decisions…

#EACR2023 on Twitter and Instagram

We loved seeing the Congress from a participant’s point of view, and were thrilled to see so many attendees sharing their own photos and videos in social media posts. Here are some select highlights from the activity we saw on the Congress hashtag…
