Amel Aziba has been announced as the third recipient of an EACR-Molecular Oncology Editorial Fellowship, funding that is awarded to enable a talented cancer researcher to gain knowledge and experience of scientific publishing through a 3-month placement with our affiliated journal, Molecular Oncology. Amel will begin her Fellowship on 02 March 2026.
Jane Smith, Chief Executive Officer of the EACR, congratulated Amel on her achievement, stating, “We are excited to welcome Amel as the third recipient of the EACR-Molecular Oncology Editorial Fellowship. This Fellowship gives EACR members a unique opportunity to explore scientific publishing, learn more about the editorial process, and develop their scientific writing skills. We warmly thank the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and our affiliated journal Molecular Oncology for making this Fellowship possible, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration and offering more opportunities to our members.”
About the Recipient
Amel Aziba is currently completing her Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Martin Eilers at the Biocenter of the University of Würzburg. She is a doctoral researcher in the Graduate School of Life Science (GSLS) and a member of the GRK2243 consortium.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree from LMU Munich, she relocated to Würzburg to pursue a master’s degree in biochemistry with a focus on molecular oncology.
During her master‘s studies, she joined the Eilers lab, where she began investigating the oncoprotein MYC and its emerging roles in cellular stress resilience. In this context, MYC moves away from its canonical positions at promoters and undergoes a stress-induced phase transition. While she initially focused on the implications of DNA damage signaling in this process, her Ph.D. research centered on the RNA-binding capacity of MYC. Together with her colleagues, she demonstrated that the phase transition of MYC reflects a re-localization from its DNA-bound to an RNA-bound state, thereby promoting MYC-mediated immune evasion.
Beyond her research, Amel Aziba has a strong interest in scientific publishing and communication. She is involved in co-review initiatives for early career researchers, regularly participates in scientific conferences and served on the organizing committee of the GRK2243 Symposium 2025.
More about EACR-Molecular Oncology Editorial Fellowships
The aim of this funding is to provide an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience of scientific publishing through a short-term fellowship with the FEBS journal Molecular Oncology. The winner will spend 3 months working remotely as part of the Molecular Oncology editorial team, and have the chance to visit the Editorial Office in Heidelberg. Learn more here.
