“It inspired and motivated me to work on my project” – Bioinformatics in Cancer 2021 in review

“It inspired and motivated me to work on my project” – Bioinformatics in Cancer 2021 in review

May saw us host Bioinformatics in Cancer, which took place virtually from 18-19 May. The meeting covered a wide range of topics in the field of bioinformatics, including single cell data analysis, genomics in relation to bioinformatics, and cellular imaging.

Recorded talks have been made available for attendees at the speakers’ discretion. In addition to this, we have made Nuria Lopez-Bigas’ talk ‘Computational analysis of cancer genomes’ available to view publicly on our YouTube page. Nuria’s talk is available to watch in full below:

“It was a great opportunity to connect with researchers. The quality of posters and talks was amazing.”

With an attendance of 217 participants across 36 countries worldwide, Bioinformatics in Cancer has shown itself to be our most popular conference so far in 2021. 99% of respondents in our feedback survey said that they would recommend EACR virtual conferences to a colleague based on their experience at this event. In addition to this, 93% of survey respondents said that the quality of the scientific content at the conference was either ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’.

Our Virtual Poster Discussion Sessions in Gather have always received high praise from participants for the amazing opportunity they provide to network with other researchers. It was for this reason that Bioinformatics in Cancer saw us introduce an additional Gather session at the end of Day 1 dedicated to informal networking. This additional session proved to be a great success, with Gather showing itself to be a highlight for many once again. A selection of comments we received about the conference can be found below:

“It was a great opportunity to connect with researchers. The quality of posters and talks was amazing.”

“The conference helped me to develop my knowledge. I realized the possibilities of applying
bioinformatics is in research and science.”

“[An] opportunity to network with the experts in the field, and get the sense of how different and new computational tools available has been used in cancer research. This definitely has provided me with better understanding on some key aspects of bioinformatics that can be applied and improved in my own area of research.”

“Talks were really good and the chat was well-organized. Moreover, the virtual session poster felt as a “in person” one, allowing to discuss with others about works.”

“A lot of interesting scientists were invited and good research was presented. I have enjoyed Gather as the solution for networking and poster presentation. The Q&A sessions were live, with the possibility to personally ask the question, not just type it. It was the best conference experience since the beginning of pandemic.”

#eacrBioinformatics on Twitter

Once again, our conference hashtag proved popular in stimulating discussion amongst participants. Here are some highlights:

Really cool online poster session at #eacrBioinformatics ! It felt like the “old” in person meetings, chatting about science and meeting colleagues from all around the globe! pic.twitter.com/VSB1nMOFnM

At least there’s plenty of opportunities to learn while the lab is still closed! I guess we all have to become bioinformaticians to prepare for a possible second spike? 😉 #EACRbioinformatics pic.twitter.com/ReuA7OxvTp

Future Virtual Events

The second half of 2021 sees the return of Goodbye Flat Biology, a fan favourite for many of our members, from 05-06 October. Later on in October, we will also be debuting AI in Diagnostics which will focus on the role Artificial Intelligence will have on the future of cancer diagnostics and clinical decision-making. To find out more, please visit the EACR Conferences page of our website.
