VIDEO | TCR Repertoires of Tumor-Infiltrating γδ T Cells Reveal PD-1-Modulated Reactivity

November 3, 2025

On 30 September 2025, the EACR hosted a webinar in collaboration with QIAGEN, one of our valued EACR Industry Partners. We were delighted to welcome Dr Joanna Mikulak from IRCCS in Milan, who discussed the correlation between the presence of Vδ1 T cells in tumour lesions and improved overall survival in endometrial cancer patients.

Thanks to QIAGEN, we are able to provide free on-demand access to the webinar recording, which can be found above.

Talk abstract

This webinar highlights the correlation between the presence of Vδ1 T cells in tumour lesions and improved overall survival in endometrial cancer patients, and how the expression of PD-1 on tumour-infiltrating Vδ1 T cells impacts their effector functionality. This presentation also explores how PD-1 blockade enhances the cytotoxic response against autologous tumour cells. Specifically, an approach based on γδ TCR repertoire analysis will be presented to demonstrate how these cells exhibit characteristics of tumour-reactive cells.

Speaker

Dr. Joanna Mikulak, Senior Research Scientist, Laboratory of Clinical and Experimental Immunology, IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, Rozzano, Milan

Dr. Mikulak joined the Clinical and Experimental Immunology Unit in 2010 as a Senior Research Scientist. Her main areas of expertise include human innate immunity, immuno-oncology and virology. She completed her Ph.D. at the Unit of Human Immunology, at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan, Italy, where she studied different regulatory mechanisms of HIV replication. Between 2006 and 2010 she worked in the Laboratory of Medicine of LIJ Medical Center, NY, USA, where she studied the role of T lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of HIV associated nephropathy (HIVAN).

Currently, Dr. Mikulak is responsible for the coordination and maintenance of several scientific projects investigating the role of human innate and adaptive immune responses in solid tumours (primary and metastatic liver tumours, gastric carcinoma, gynecological tumours, glioblastoma), viral infections (HIV, SARS-CoV-2) and autoimmune diseases (PBC). In particular her work focus on the complexity of innate and adaptive mechanisms in the pathogenesis of different human diseases by applying innovative cellular and molecular technical approaches such as high-dimension flow cytometry and single cell RNA/TCR-sequencing.
