A lot has happened since our last in-person Congress in Amsterdam in 2018. After virtual congresses in 2020 and 2021, finally in 2022 we were able to meet face-to-face in sunny Seville for the EACR 2022 Congress: Innovative Cancer Science, Translating Biology to Medicine.
We enjoyed four days of fantastic science with a range of Plenary sessions, Symposia, Meet the Expert panels and Educational Sessions. From 20-23 June, we saw 1800+ participants from 59 countries come through our doors – a huge thank you to everyone who joined us.
This year’s programme included seven keynote lectures, including talks from EMBO Member and President-Elect Yardena Samuels and 2018 Mike Price Gold Medal Award Winner Karen Vousden. There were 28 Proffered Paper presentations throughout the week on a range of topics.
Award Lectures
The final day saw the presentation of three awards: the Pezcoller Foundation-EACR Translational Cancer Researcher Award, the Pezcoller-Marina Larcher Fogazzaro-EACR Women in Cancer Research Award, and the Mike Price Gold Medal Award. The Translational Cancer Researcher Award was presented to Nicholas Turner of the Institute of Cancer Research. Following this, Maria Soengas received this year’s Women in Cancer Research Award and afterwards gave a talk titled ‘Melanoma: from a black box to the forefront in immune therapy’. Cédric Blanpain was the recipient of this year’s Mike Price Gold Medal Award, awarded to a senior researcher who has made exceptional contributions to the progress of cancer research in Europe.
Career Discovery Sessions
On Tuesday and Wednesday we hosted Career Discovery Sessions dedicated to young researchers who were looking to boost their career by learning tips and tricks on different professional pathways. The session room was organised with ’round tables’, each focused on a given topic and expertise.
The Sessions, available through pre-registration only, was hugely popular and well received. In our participant feedback survey, one respondent noted that they thought the session was “one of the best parts of the programme”. Another praised “the opportunity to interact with many researchers, discuss topics relevant to your career and learn a lot of new things.”
“A wonderful opportunity to meet and interact with scientists and researchers from across the world”
Over 96% of attendees who gave feedback said that they would recommend the Congress to others. When asked for their congress highlights, many stated that the high quality of the speakers was what impressed them most. The speakers were described as “engaging” and “dynamic” by participants who were delighted by the range of topics discussed during the sessions.
The poster sessions were also highlight for many. “The poster exhibition was so enriching and it gave us the chance to interact with those groups that interested us the most” reported one participant, with another describing the sessions as “particularly lively”.
The Meet the Editor panel discussion, with editors from the world’s top cancer journals, proved to be a popular feature. “I listened to it last year and this year and every time it is very informative and gives me ideas for the future.”
